South East Queensland team to join WNBL

Basketball Australia have today announced that a South East Queensland basketball team will compete in the 2015/16 Wattle Valley Women’s National Basketball League. This says one thing to me…..derby time! (or showdown, or q-clash or whatever you want to call it)

Former Australian Boomer and four-time Olympian Shane Heal has been appointed the team’s inaugural coach and Jayco Australian Opals player Erin Phillips is the first player to sign.

Healy is excited about the prospect: “I’m looking forward to setting the right culture in our team and recruiting girls that want to work hard and who aim to be the best possible players they can be. We want to seriously compete for the championship every year and play with the sort of passion that will make our fans proud.”

“To have Erin Phillips as our first signing is exciting for the fans and for me as a coach. Erin plays extremely hard and her competitive nature will set the tone for the rest of our team. She is a great defender, can score and distribute the ball. She is the sort of player who inspires teammates and fans alike.”

A social media competition will be held to establish the team name, so get your thinking caps on. What are your early thoughts on a team name? No doubt when the two Queensland teams meet they will play for a shield or trophy…who or what should this be named after?
