Delezio dreams of being a Paralympian

She’s the girl that continues to defy all the odds and now she’s doing it again. Most of you will know the story of Sophie Delezio.

In 2003 she suffered burns to 85% of her body after a car smashed into the Sydney childcare centre. She was then struck again in 2006 by a car at a pedestrian crossing. You would think the ordeal of it all would have a profound negative effect on your life, right? WRONG!

Sophie originally had dreams of swimming at the Paralympics which had to be abandoned due to her many skin-grafting operations. Not to be deterred, she shifted her focus from under the water to on top of the water and is now training with the Balmain Rowing Club as they specialise in training teams with disabilities.

She’s up at 430am twice a week to hit the water. She has a prosthetic hand attached to her right oar and prosthetic legs which enable her to row in the single skulls for Balmain. Her goal is to compete in the 2015 World Rowing Championships in August in France and beyond that the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. I do not have one inch of doubt inside me…she’ll be there.
